Why do plants need sunlight?
Just like humans need food to live, plants need sunlight. Sunlight is very important for plants because it helps them make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. During photosynthesis, plants take in sunlight and use it to turn water and carbon dioxide into food.
Without sunlight, most plants cannot make food and would not survive. That's why you see plants always turning toward the light. However, not all plants need the same amount of sunlight. Some plants can grow in low light, while others need many hours of bright light every day.
Besides sunlight, plants also need water, air, and nutrients from the soil to grow. These are their needs. But just like people, plants can also have 'wants.' For example, some plants 'want' extra nutrients to grow bigger and faster, and others might 'want' more space to spread out their roots.
Next time you look at a plant, remember that sunlight is not just making it warm, but also helping it to make its food. While we can't see it happening, without this process, we wouldn't have the oxygen we breathe or the fruits and vegetables we eat. So, while plants don't have wants like phones or toys, they have very important needs that help them, and us, to live.
