Seahorses are small, unique fish that live in warm ocean waters. They come in many colors, like orange, green, yellow, and even red, and they can be as small as 2 centimeters or as big as 35 centimeters—that’s about as long as a standard school ruler. Unlike most fish, seahorses have a curved tail and a head that looks a bit like a horse, which is how they got their name. 

Home Among the Coral 

Seahorses prefer to stay near the seafloor among the coral reefs, sea grasses, and mangroves. They use their prehensile tails to anchor themselves to the plants or corals to prevent being swept away by currents. 

A Seahorse’s Diet 

Seahorses are not very good swimmers, so they need to live where food is easy to catch. They eat small shrimp and plankton, which they suck into their tiny mouths. Their way of eating is like using a straw to drink a milkshake. 

Caring Creatures 

One of the most special things about seahorses is that the fathers take care of the babies. The mother seahorse puts her eggs into a pouch on the father's belly. He carries the eggs until they hatch into tiny seahorses. This unique trait shows that in the animal kingdom, there are many ways to care for young ones.
