The Remarkable Octopus

reading image

I am amazed by the unique abilities of the octopus. Its camouflage skills are incredible! When an octopus feels threatened or wants to hide, it can change the color and texture of its skin to match its surroundings. This makes it very hard for predators or prey to see it. I think if I had the same ability, I'd surprise my friends every day!

Octopuses have more astonishing talents. They have three hearts! Two of these hearts pump blood to the gills, where it gets oxygen. The third heart pumps the oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. When an octopus swims, the third heart stops beating, which is why they prefer to crawl rather than swim. If I had three hearts, I wonder if I could run faster or longer?

One of the most talked-about features of an octopus is its intelligence. They can solve puzzles, use tools, and even escape from their enclosures in search of food or adventure. I once read about an octopus that squirted water at a light bulb to turn it off because it was bothering him. That’s some smart thinking!

Speaking of escaping, octopuses are master escape artists. They can squeeze their entire bodies through tiny holes, thanks to their boneless structure. This means if an opening is as wide as their beak (the only hard part of their body), they can fit through it. It reminds me of the time I tried to squeeze through the school's fence but got stuck!

Most octopuses live alone, and they don’t form groups like many other marine animals. While they might not have buddies swimming alongside them, they certainly are equipped with fascinating abilities. It makes me wonder, if I had the skills of an octopus, what would I do first?
