The History of the Eiffel Tower

reading image

The Eiffel Tower, a symbol of Paris and France, is admired by people worldwide. It's an iconic structure that represents architectural wonder. But how did this tower come into existence? And why was it even built?

The Eiffel Tower was the brainchild of engineer Gustave Eiffel, even though the original design was sketched by two lesser-known men, Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier. They envisioned this iron tower for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) held in Paris, meant to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.

Many Parisians, including well-known artists and architects, were initially against the construction of the tower. They considered it an eyesore and believed it would ruin the city's beautiful skyline. Despite the backlash, the project went ahead. The tower was constructed in just over two years, an impressive feat for its time.

Upon completion, standing at 324 meters tall, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest man-made structure in the world. It held this record until 1930 when the Chrysler Building in New York City surpassed it. Initially, there were plans to dismantle the tower after 20 years. However, due to its usefulness in communication purposes and its growing popularity, it was left standing.

Today, the Eiffel Tower is visited by millions every year. It's not just an architectural marvel but a testament to the changing perceptions and the power of innovation.
