One bright autumn day, Lisa's grandmother invited her over to make an apple pie from scratch. Lisa was thrilled! She had always adored the rich aroma of her grandmother’s apple pies and was keen to learn the secret behind their deliciousness. Eagerly, Lisa and her grandmother got started in the kitchen.
To begin, her grandmother turned on the oven to 425 degrees, while Lisa looked for the pie dish and rolling pin. They both began sourcing the ingredients the recipe demanded. From the pantry, her grandmother took cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, sugar, and a pinch of salt. She then asked Lisa to fetch butter, brown sugar, and lemon juice from the fridge. They organized all the ingredients neatly on the table.
Lisa then peeled and sliced a basket of fresh apples while her grandmother prepared the pie crust. Mixing flour, butter, and a bit of water, her grandmother kneaded the dough till it was soft and pliable. Lisa sprinkled cinnamon and nutmeg over the apples, and relished the sweet and spicy scent that wafted up. After adding sugar and lemon juice, she stirred the apple filling until it was well-coated.
Once the pie crust was rolled out and fitted into the pie dish, Lisa poured the apple filling into the crust. Her grandmother then covered the pie with another layer of dough, making sure to cut small slits on the top for steam to escape. Lisa brushed the top crust with a beaten egg, which would give it a golden hue after baking.
Her grandmother placed the pie in the preheated oven and set a timer for 50 minutes. While waiting, they both washed the dishes and chatted about old family stories. Lisa giggled as her grandmother recalled a funny incident involving an apple tree.
The timer's ring signaled that the pie was done. Lisa, with her eyes wide, looked at the perfectly baked pie with its golden-brown crust. After allowing it to cool slightly, her grandmother sliced a piece for each of them. With a dollop of vanilla ice cream on the side, they both savored the warm and flavorful apple pie, creating a memory that Lisa would cherish forever.
