Sophie stared at her notebook, the once white pages now decorated with numerous doodles and scribbles. Another mundane class, another hour wasted in daydreams. An alien named Zarnak sat next to her. Of course, only she could see Zarnak, to everyone else, it was just an empty seat.
“Hey, Sophie,” Zarnak whispered, trying to avoid the attention of the teacher. “Would you like to join me for a journey beyond the stars?”
Sophie looked around, making sure no one heard. “You mean, leave Earth? Are you for real?”
“Absolutely! I’ve been observing Earth, and I find it… uninspiring,” Zarnak responded, his three blue eyes blinking simultaneously. “There are countless wonders out there that you couldn’t even imagine.”
Julian, a classmate sitting in front, turned around. “Sophie, who are you whispering to?”
“Just to myself,” Sophie lied, giving Zarnak an annoyed glance.
At lunchtime, Sophie sat alone in the cafeteria. She unpacked her lunch: a ham and cheese sandwich, a juice box, and a rather sad-looking pear. She began sketching on her napkin. A city with tall spiraled towers and flying vehicles hovered above the streets – her imagination of Zarnak’s home planet.
Zarnak materialized beside her, holding what looked like an interstellar lunchbox. “Want a taste of my home food? It’s much better than that sandwich.”
Sophie hesitated, then took a bite. It tasted like a mix between strawberries and chocolate. “Wow, this is amazing! Why are you offering me all this?”
“I need a human’s perspective. My people have always been curious about Earth and its inhabitants,” Zarnak explained.
The school bell rang, interrupting their conversation. As they headed back to class, Lucy, the most popular girl in school, stopped Sophie. “Party at my place this weekend. You should come.” It was a rare invitation. Sophie nodded, excited.
That evening, Zarnak appeared in her room. “So, have you decided? A life of extraordinary experiences among the stars, or a lifetime here?”
Sophie hesitated. “But I have family here, friends. And what about school?”
“Education among my kind is far superior,” Zarnak insisted. “You'll have knowledge beyond anyone on Earth. Plus, think of all the adventures.”
Sophie pondered the offer. The appeal of the unknown, the allure of a life full of adventures and knowledge, was tempting. But at the same time, she had just been invited to Lucy’s party. She started to gain recognition in her own world.
Zarnak could sense her hesitation. “Take your time. The offer stands as long as I am here.”
Weeks passed. Sophie enjoyed her time on Earth. She attended Lucy’s party, joined the art club, and even started dating Julian. Her life was shaping up.
One evening, Zarnak approached her for the last time. “It’s time for me to go, Sophie. My mission here is done. Are you coming?”
Sophie hugged Zarnak, her invisible friend. “Thank you for the offer. But I’ve found my place here. I want to explore the wonders of my own world.”
Zarnak nodded, his eyes glistening. “Very well. Take care, Sophie.”
Sophie watched as Zarnak vanished, leaving behind memories of a world full of possibilities. But for now, she was content exploring her own world, one day at a time.
