School Lunches

It is a common debate whether school lunches should be standardized for all students or if there should be flexibility in the options available. While some believe having a one-size-fits-all menu is beneficial, I think schools should offer varied choices to cater to individual student needs.

To begin with, every student does not have the same dietary requirement. Take, for instance, my classmate, Anika. She's a vegetarian due to her religious beliefs. Then there's Carlos, who is lactose intolerant and cannot consume dairy products. If schools were to offer just one menu item each day, it might not be suitable for both Anika and Carlos, among others.

Moreover, cultural diversity should be celebrated, and one way to do this is through food. By offering a variety of food options, schools can introduce students to dishes from different cultures. This can serve as an educational opportunity as well. When my school had a "World Food Day", many of my peers tried dishes from countries they had never heard of, and it sparked interesting conversations about different traditions and customs.

Nutritional needs also vary. While one student might need a calorie-dense meal to support their athletic activities, another might require a lighter meal due to health concerns. By offering different food options, schools can ensure that each student has access to meals that suit their individual needs.

Lastly, choice in meals can teach students decision-making skills. When presented with multiple options, students learn to make decisions based on their preferences, health, and nutritional needs. This is an essential life skill that will benefit them in the future.

In conclusion, while a standardized menu might seem like a simpler solution, offering varied choices in school lunches is more beneficial. Every student is unique, and their lunch options should reflect that.
